3rd time’s the charm

So, another 3-day weekend, another chance to PAINT MY BEDROOM!!

That’s right, folks.  First I painted it way too dark brown, turning my little 10×10 room into the batcave. So then, in an effort to lighten it all up, I found Desert Sand, which turned out a little too pale and blah for me (plus, it had this odd sort of plum undertone).  Desperate to find the right color, and dreading emptying out the room again, I forged onward.

To Lowes, where I brought home dang near every single paint square thingie they had !  After narrowing them down to the 5 best contestants, I taped those squares up on my walls, and lived with them for a week, noting how each one looked in the light, at night, during the sun, on a cloudy day.

Finally got that grouping narrowed down to 3.  Then, tossed one out because it was so close to the other two.  So I had it down to 2 colors, and got this crazy notion to do the entire room in one color but then do one wall in the other, like an accent wall.  And since it was the darker of the two, I needed the accent wall facing the window.

So, on Friday, I emptied out the room AGAIN, prepped on Saturday morning, and got busy.  This time (I must be getting better at this) I managed to paint with clothes ON and didn’t get paint all over me.  With the help of my sister, she did the cutting in, I rollered on this new color – Cinnamon Brulee – and fell instantly in love.

FINALLY, this was the color I’d been searching for all this time!  Then when it got time to paint the darker wall, I poured it out, ooohed and ahhhed over the pretty color, rollered it on one patch, and hated it.  Luckily it was easy enough to paint over, so my entire bedroom (all four walls and ceiling) are now Cinnamon Brulee.

And it’s fantastic!  No more painting for me!  Who knew it could be SO hard to find just the right shade of color.  Especially when you had this idea in your head of what you wanted, but couldn’t find a sample square anywhere that matched it.

Cinnamon Brulee = Happy Camper.

all ego, very little id.

So today the mailman brought me my advance copy of Keeper, in paperback, printed by Lulu and offered up by Trunk Novels.   And all I can say – since this is the first time I’ve seen a paperback printed by Lulu before – is WOW.

Seriously, my Ego is having a field day with this.  The printing is absolutely perfect, the cover is glossy and amazing. I picked a custom cover art instead of the stock art supplied by Lulu and I think it makes all the difference in the world.  In fact, with all of the Trunk Novel offerings, you’ll find custom cover art.

The binding is flawless, the print perfection.  In short, the quality of Lulu’s print runs are on an exact even par with any book you’ll find on the shelves of Barnes & Noble.  My Ego loves seeing this beloved older piece finally bound in print.  And as a Trade Paperback, it’s slightly larger than a regular paperback. More the size of a hardback, really, at 6″ x 9″.

At Trunk Novels, you’ll find plenty of high quality, well written novels, novellas, and short collections in the coming year.  All available to read Free online, or downloadable in pdf for Free – but I would encourage you, when you find a story you really enjoy, go ahead and purchase a hard copy through the Trunk Novels storefront at Lulu. That way you can share the stories with friends, pass them around your reading circle, trade them with fellow commuters, or just keep them around for easy reading.

Me, I’m still holding mine.  It’s so purdy 😀

And now I can take it to the beach, without lugging along a laptop or giant 3-ring binder of printed pages.

In fact, I’m so thrilled with how Keeper turned out, I’m very tempted to give the recently rewritten sequels the same treatment.

now available in paperback:

When Captain Alex Marcase’s estranged father dies, he hopes his inheritance will be enough to fund his next deep space expedition. When his inheritance turns out to be a genetically-altered slave named Evan, it’s just the beginning of the end of Alex’s normal, orderly life. Not only does Even have his own brand of morality, his special abilities are also coveted by his late owner’s enemies. As the pair head into deep space with their enemies in hot pursuit and Alex’s chief rival ahead of them, will they be able to learn to appreciate each other’s unique abilities in time? Or will their differences be too much to overcome?

Keeper is a novel I wrote years ago, and figured it would never amount to much, but I enjoyed it, and several friends enjoyed it. Then I wrote sequels, several of them. But one day, I got the notion Keeper could be so much more – so I completely reinvented the series. Shaving 30,000 words from the original and shifting the entire plot, then I remapped the sequels and turned them into totally new stories that continued the newly rewritten adventure.

Make no mistake – this novel has not been traditionally published. It is now a Trunk Novels Production, available as a free download, or free to read on the internet at http://www.Trunknovels.blogspot.com and also available for purchase as a Trade Paperback.

Be sure to visit Trunk Novels for more high quality stories by serious-minded writers.

just the facts, ma’am

As a writer, it’s my responsibility to make sure the things I mention are factual – yes, even in fiction.  And by that I mean, should I decide to write my characters into a known and real city – say, Seattle – then it’s my responsibility to make sure any landmarks I happen to mention are for real.

If I write that a character drove north Aurora avenue a left on Westin, any readers familiar with the area would throw the book across the room in frustration – because they’d all know taking a left on Westin if heading north on Aurora is physically impossible – and would land me on Alaskan Avenue below, if I was lucky enough not to roll into the bay itself.

We can make up a city name that doesn’t exist, and have carte blanche, but you pick a city that you could have readers in, and you’d best watch what you’re saying.  I can’t write a character in New York with any real confidence, because I’ve never been to New York. So if I did, I’d have to avoid mentioning directions or places or even the attitudes of folk on the streets.

And you can always tell when a writer is faking it, relying on the stereotypical scenario they’ve seen already on television.

Today, surfin’ the internet during lunch, I happened upon this tiny little blurb – a description of some new Fall show on one of the big networks.  The innacuracy didn’t make me laugh and nod knowingly at what we all know is Hollywood stupidity – no – it got my blood boiling.  Is it seriously TOO much to ask a television writer to at least do HALF as much investigating into the facts?

Seriously?

Here’s what it said: “Harper’s Island” is directed by Jon Turteltaub (“Jericho”) and takes a heavily serialized look at a group of wedding guests terrorized by a killer on an island off the coast of Seattle.”

Off the coast of Seattle.

1) Seattle isn’t on the coast. In fact, from just about anywhere, to get to the COAST of what I presume they mean the ocean, will be another 2 hours in the car. Yes, we have a bay, Seattle is on the water, but that’s inland waters.

2) There are no islands off the coast of Washington. Sorry, dude.  So you’re making one up, I can forgive that – but keep in mind, please, that the cluster of islands we’re going to assume you mean are called the San Juans. Half are USA, half are Canadian. And they’re not “off the coast of Seattle” either. They’re nestled in the inland waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, between Vancouver Island and the mainland.

3) We have no sharks here. I just know they’re going to show warm sandy beaches, and talk about danger in the water.  The only danger in the water here is freezing your balls off.

Gawd – this reminds me of that show Frasier. No where in this entire city is it possible to have that view out his window.  The Space Needle isn’t right downtown, it’s off to the side, and it’s a hell of a lot smaller than the majority of the office buildings.

You’re right – it really IS too much to ask.  It’s just a Pet Peeve of mine.

And everyone else who lives here.  sigh

Coming Soon

To the Interwebbies near you . . .

One of my most beloved, yet eternally Unpublished novels – Keeper – will soon be available in paperback.   And, if sales are decent enough to warrant the bother, it has sequels 😀

This is a novel (series) I wrote years (and years) ago, then completely rewrote.  What was once 5 stand alone novels became 3, better written books. And while they are, admittedly, not commercial enough, they’re still a damn entertaining read, if you ask me 😀

So keep an eye on the blog – details and links will be available by no later than July 1st, and possibly sooner.  And if Keeper strikes your fancy, you’ll soon have an interesting assortment of other novels, written by other authors, in various genres – free for the download or easily purchased as paperbacks to have, hold, and share.

The times, they are a’changin’

There’s something new in the works.  Something that should quiet the Voices inside me, satisfy the Writer that I am, and hopefully bring entertainment for those who come here, and folks they know.

I don’t mean to sound cryptic, but suffice it to say if you’re a fan of good storytelling, interesting tales told by talented writers who treat this business with respect, you’ll have something to look forward to in June.

And if you promise not to brand me a complete lunatic, I’ll share with you what the Voices have been saying to me next week 😀

it’s dark in here

So, I’ve started the next novel, Anomaly, and I’m pleased with the progress early on.  I have this novel all planned out, as usual, but I always leave room for changes in direction.  Meanwhile, Ether is being shopped, and my mood is turning darkerer and darkerer today.

I’ve been asking myself a lot of questions, and still don’t have proper answers. And while I’m not a pessimist, or an optimist (I’m a realist) I’ve started to wonder about the process called Publishing.

Nothing specific, mind you. Not anything I’d want to come out and make a fool of myself by saying, anyway. That’s a topic for another post, and a clear-headed day, of which today is not.  But think about these stats, while I pour myself another vodka:

Agents typically read 250 or so queries per week, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  But that’s a low number, if you consider one agent who blogs her end-of-year stats as 30,000 queries in 2007 – resulting in 5 new clients, only 4 of which had never been published before.

Hey, that’s a .027% chance of snagging her as an agent!  Well, let me just go grab those Lotto numbers. . .

I know, that’s just one agent. And a top one, to boot. Your chances of landing any top agent as a new writer are pretty damn nil. So you work your way down the list, having started at the top. Then you reach the bottom, and start looking at small presses. Maybe e-books. Meanwhile, of course, you’re writing another novel that you’re sure will be The One.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

It’ll happen, you say. If I keep plugging away, it’ll happen. Good writers get published. Write a great book, and it’ll get an agent.  Now, if I were to call Bullshit right now, that’d be sour grapes. Every writer swears his or her novel is pure gold, and if no one buys it, then the system is flawed.

But I’m seeing other writers struggle, too. I’m seeing great writers stumble and have no success. And I’m seeing the odds, and wondering many things. Mostly I just want to keep writing, and stop thinking. Today I’m just in a dark place, is all.

While some say the glass is half full, others say half empty, and I’ve always said it’s simply a glass with vodka in it . . . I’m thinking it could be time to drink that damn vodka and take the bottle to the couch.

Work out your own metaphor, I’ll go get hammered and cheer up, probably by the weekend.

Bottom’s Up!

get the charge out of your life

I’ve been reading a lot lately about the recession (you know, the one no one wants to admit is here) and the economy in general – banks and interest rates and credit, oh my! And I can’t help but feel one of my rants coming on about spending more than you make, using credit cards to “get by” and the false idea that gets passed around suggesting you need credit cards in order to have a good credit score.

Writers don’t make a fortune, with the tiny insignificant exception of the very very few who make the news, most of us ain’t gettin’ rich doing this. So it’s time we got smart.

First of all, let’s tackle that last one – the Credit Score.

Did you know that the idea of credit cards being necessary to keep a good credit score is a Lie fed to us all by the very people who invented credit cards ? You’ll hear it all the time, from all sorts of places. Your hairdresser will tell you she heard it on the news. You’ll read about it on Yahoo. That guy in the next office swears he was told by his banker that it’s true.

It’s a lie.

Your credit score is based on your ability to pay your bills on time, incur no late fees, and have no collection agency reports against you. That’s it. It has nothing to do with being loaned money and paying it back, which is also misleading. Do you pay rent or have a mortgage? Do you pay the power bill on time? Do you get a cable or satellite bill every month? How about your internet, or natural gas, or maybe you pay car insurance or have a car payment.

You pay those on time, never bounce a check, and not one of those companies has sent you to collections? Then you have an excellent credit score. And by the way – they’re loaning you money by way of services. You got a month of cable before paying, same with electricity, the internet, all of it. You used their service for a month, now you’re paying. So they’ve loaned you service, trusting you’ll pay it back.

Another pitfall that I see all too often, and was starting to notice in myself before I was able to change my life around, was the Emotional Spending.

It’s not limited to women, in case you were thinking that, but I’d be willing to bet we lead the percentages. You’re upset about something, usually it’s the fact that you have no money because you have too many debts, so in order to make yourself feel a little better, you go out and buy yourself a “treat”, and you charge it.

Huge Red Light people. Huge red light.

This is exactly what they mean when they say Money can’t buy happiness. It’s not a saying geared toward making you stop buying Lotto tickets because suddenly becoming a millionaire won’t add pleasure to your life. No. What it means is – if you’re depressed – spending money ain’t the cure. Buying a new sweater with your VISA isn’t going to cure what ails you. Pulling out that Mastercard so you can walk home with new candlesticks for the dining room table will not make the depression go away.

It’s a trap that will quickly become a death spiral if you don’t recognize it and stop, now. Imagine how much happier you’d be if you didn’t have all that debt that was bringing down your spirits in the first place?

Getting out of debt is hard, and it won’t happen over night. Like trying to drop 50lbs, it took you years to gain the weight, it’ll take some time to make it go away. It requires a change in attitude, some determination, and the will to stick to it.

But the biggest change is Spend less than you Make. Like eating less and exercising more, if you spend less, you can save more.

So what are you going to do with your Economic Stimulus money? Do you see it as the down payment on a new computer? Maybe an HD TV, or that nice riding lawn mower you’ve always wanted? If you use your government cash as a down payment, you’ll end up spending more than you were given. If you run out and spend it, are you buying something you honestly need, or just want?

Mine’s going into a savings account that I set up to be hard to get to – it can’t be accessed via ATM, and if I really want some of that money, I have to fill out a slip and go IN to the bank. I can’t transfer funds electronically or simply spend it on an impulse, and that’s the whole point.

Sometimes we need to set up road blocks for ourselves, for the better. Other times, we just need a change in old habits.

Think about it. Educate yourself on the difference between Need and Want in your life, and remember – Writing is free. It doesn’t cost us a thing to create novels, and aside from a little postage for some queries, and some blood, sweat and tears, it doesn’t cost a thing to get published.

So get to writing! We want at least some of that Economic Stimulus money spent at the bookstore, after all 🙂

when research pays

So, y’all remember not too long ago when I thought someone might have messed with my ID, tossled my credit report hither and yon, and I wound up doing weeks of research and investigation while waiting for my credit reports?

Turns out, I was fine.  But now, just last night, I learned someone HAS done this to my Mother.

She’s managed to report it to her bank, who put a stop on the use of her debit card – and she’s not responsible for the money this person has spent.  Now she’s calling the credit reporting agencies because, apparently, one thing this thief did was open up a charge account in Mom’s name.

Thankfully, there are ways to fix this.  Stopping it quickly was a help, they’d only managed to spend on the account for 3 days before they were found out. And knowing what to do next is helping.

So for once, I’m glad to have had a scare myself. It taught me what to do, and how to do it, if anything like this should happen.  I’ve been able to help my Mother take the proper steps, and hopefully keep her calm, until things can be fixed.

What a world, eh?

words to live by

So today I get the new router/modem, which means tonight I go home and take two aspirin.

This is like when I need to build a new Access database at the start of a new year, and relearn all the calculations and commands that I only have to write once a year – but since I only have to write them once a year – I have to read up on how they’re done again, which takes a week, a bottle of Bacardi, and a short temper.

Sure, usually I just copy from last year, but there are always changes that have to be made. It’s not too bad, really, so long as I remain calm, take notes, and start early.

Tonight I’ll go home, get out a nice big notebook, and start writing down all the settings from everything, everywhere. I’ll write them all down, meticulously, before unplugging anything or deleting any profiles.

Then I get to plug in the new router/modem, install the software, remember that I forgot to bring home an Ethernet cable, try USB instead, have a drink and put it off till Thursday.

On Thursday evening, I’ll remember an Ethernet cable from work, then try again. Setting up all the high security that will make my virtual home my own little Fort Knoxx. Then forget to give my other laptop permission to enter, and do it all again. Then I have to call Wavecable and give them my new MAC address, so their signal can find my new router.

Then, since that won’t work as easily as it sounds, I’ll go watch baseball and forget it for the night.

Sometime Friday night, after a few drinks, I’ll try again. I suspect it won’t work, then it will work because I’ll have finally remembered that one SIMPLE thing that I’d been over looking – something like plugging it in, or turning something to the ON position.

If all goes well, I should be online at home again by May 14th, 2009 😀

Or, yanno, this weekend.
